Artist Statement:

This piece is a combination of two important people in my life who has given me an object that inevitably reminds me of them.  The first person in my Abuelita (my great grandmother) who before she passed gave me the music box she had since she was a little girl. The lid of the music box and a map of the world in varying colors. My dads best friend Gerado has been in my life since I was young and he is one of the most constant people in my life, has gone to every major event in my life since my preschool graduation. For my seventeenth birthday he gave me a vintage globe to "help me with my studies in college".  He has had the globe since he was young and had it with him on his college journey. Both of these things seems very different to me they have the same feeling- something that was very important to the owner yet they gave it to me. I decided to create a combination of the two by creating a spherical base to emulate the globe, the strings to represent the music box, and the color blue to represent not only the vibrancy of my Abuelita but to also capture the color of the memories held in each object. The piece is weathered to represent the notion that it is used and has been passed down from person to person thus not being in immaculate condition.
